Finding yourself… | Milwaukee Wedding Photographer

Probably one of the greatest experiences I had in college was studying abroad.  The fall of my junior year — not yet 21 — I hugged my family and my boyfriend (this is still when people could walk to the gate with you) and boarded a plane to London.  That is right about when I thought to myself, “what the hell am I doing?”  I knew not a soul.  At that point, I had never traveled beyond the east coast of the U.S.  I remember wearing the international programs t-shirt that was provided in the registration packet just in case someone else was traveling for the same reason and looking to make a friend — what a dork move!  I didn’t cry.  I shook.  My entire body was in total anxiety mode.  Luckily, I turned that fear into determination realizing this experience was going to be profound.  The flight was actually the easiest part. I struck up a conversation with the person next to me…British, thank god and I learned a little about where I was headed. Although I don’t think I remembered any of it once the plane touched down.  I clenched the welcome form letter (also provided in the registration packet) that contained a few vague directions on how to get from the Gatwick airport to my flat.  I think I read that letter at least 100 times…mostly to ensure I wasn’t going to end up in another country, but also just to hide the fact that I felt completely lost.  Oh, and, did I mention my luggage weighed about the same as me?  Imagine lil ole me trying to haul those bags around in my “too school for cool” t-shirt. But I did it.  I felt like a super hero. I was in the UK.  If only folks back home could see me.  I was well on my way to becoming “big city”, worldly and independent. Cue the upbeat, “she is on her way” adventure music.  I made it to my flat, checked in at registration and received my room assignment.  With key in hand, I schlepped my luggage to the front door.  Swung it open and the angels from heaven above sang…until my eyes adjusted and I realized I was standing at the base of 5 flights of stairs…78 of the most narrow steps I had ever seen, to be exact. There was no elevator and my flat was on the top floor. The Chrissy of today would have left all items that were not absolutely necessary on the curb and found the nearest pub for a pint…the 20-year-old Chrissy didn’t have the guts for that sort of thing. Instead, I lugged my bags up one at a time, stopping every few steps to catch my breath. My arms and legs were sore for days after. But I had triumphed. I was confident I could make it through anything there after, and I did. I made great friends. Visited 7 countries. Saw amazing theater and art. And learned more about myself in those 16 weeks then most of the 20 years prior. It was awesome.

I am convinced that it takes the experience of crossing over countries, cultures and fear to find yourself… and sometimes you find it in someone else.  That was the case for Brad and Yukari.  When I heard of their love story, I totally got it. They met while Brad was studying abroad in Japan. Ok, way more adventurous then my English-speaking counter exploit, I know. And I am so sure Brad didn’t pack his weight in “essentials”. But I get how he put himself out there in a new world with new opportunities and ultimately discovered a new part of himself in Japan and in Yukari. They fell in love that semester and a piece of Brad will always remain in Japan as long as she is there. But Brad and Yukari are holding on to their love despite the distance and these two halves are becoming forever whole when they get married in August.

I will share more about them in my post from their wedding, but on a recent visit Yukari made to Milwaukee to spend a month with her fiancé, we got together for an engagement session. I am honored to be capturing all the love these two share. Congratulations, Brad and Yukari!  I look forward to seeing you in August.

A NYE Wedding | Mark and Ashley, December 31, 2011 | Milwaukee wedding photography

I am starting to really believe in the whole online dating thing.  While, I have never tried it out for myself (I don’t think my hubby would be too keen on that idea – ha!), so many modern-day  love stories start with that courageous step of putting yourself out there via an online profile.   It must be incredibly difficult to be truthful on those things, but only when you are can you be linked up with that missing half that you have been searching for.  So I think it goes something like this…It starts with the photo and profile -followed by winks, flirts or what ever the sites call them these days – moves into a few email conversations – then off on the highly anticipated date.  Then “first comes love, then comes marriage, then comes baby in the baby carriage” or something like that.  ..I think the e-harmonies and match.coms of the world have got match-making down to a science.  The evidence, of course, is in the success rate of the relationships.  One relationship that has me totally convinced is that of Mark and Ashley — and their story started online and evolved into love and marriage.

Mark and Ashley are amazing!  First of all they are so much fun.  They decided to get married on New Year’s Eve this year and it was a huge party!  It was a night full of love, laughs and all new beginnings.  I imagine they each made romantic resolutions to one another and will carry on that tradition year after year.

During their ceremony, the pastor read allowed emails he had received from the couple each describing why they have chosen the other.  I thought this was the sweetest gesture to share during the ceremony.  First of all how each of them wrote their sentiments was so representative of their individual personality.  Ashley wrote a beautifully poetic revelation about how the thing she loves the most about Mark is that he always knows where to stand — physically, emotionally, spiritually.  It was such a lovely way to describe her man’s strength and honor.  She ended it with “and he is pretty cute too”…absolutely perfect!  Bravo, Ashley!  Then the pastor shared that Mark’s letter was actually a numbered list, which was so true to the way he thinks.  Always organized, always calculated, always thoughtful.  The pastor could not even read all of his bulleted points, but the ones that he did read described his hopes, dreams and unconditional love for the woman he had chosen as his other half.  I am surprised he didn’t have all the ladies swooning.  I know so many of them were in tears…(ok, including me. I can’t help it, it was just so beautiful!).   These two are more then just husband and wife, they are true BFFs.  After being pronounced husband and wife, they did a leaping high five delighting the audience!  That gesture then set the tone for what was in store for the reception…or shall I say NYE bash!

OK, so, I was prepared for a dramatic entry from this bride and groom, but I had no idea that they would be doing the routine to Dirty Dancing’s Time of My Life!  I cannot even imagine my husband attempting that one. But Mark had it down!  Patrick Swayze circa 1980s watch out!  But that was just the beginning.  Mark and Ashley let several dances  and even taught their guests one of their favorites.  They were carefree and completely, blissfully, happy.  Mark never took his eyes off his beautiful bride.  Ashley looked at Mark with such adoration that it made the hearts of onlookers melt (especially ones like me with cameras).

This bash was the invitation of the year!  But sadly, Mark’s parents could not be there…they had both passed away and were missed throughout the festivities.  But Mark’s Italian heritage was very present with traditional Italian dancing. And Mark’s sister, gave a dynamic speech filled with humor and spunk like I have never heard — big sisters, rule!

I was so honored to be a part of Mark and Ashley’s big day.  By midnight, I was pretty exhausted, but I was buzzing over their wedding for days afterwards.  Such a special way to ring in 2012.  Thank you, guys for believing in me and allowing me to capture your love and happiness.

In this next photo, Mark showed up to the ceremony with a bag of peas.  He didn’t get much sleep the night before so he was trying to cool his eyes so they wouldn’t be so puffy.

Ashley dabbed Mark’s eyes after the pastor read her email.  It was so well written!

The high five!  Love!

The cake was a replica of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.  The couple had traveled to Italy just a few months before the wedding and this photo and the cake topper inspired their entire cake.

Here are the Italian Dancers that Mark’s family has been a part of for decades.  Mark even joined in.

The balloon drop at midnight was so fun!

Class of 2013 Senior Pictures!

Most people dread class pictures. They always turn out awkward and totally unflattering, just to be forever documented in the year book. Then comes senior year when you finally get to take some photos that show you at your best.

The senior portrait is personal and fun. They capture nothing but personality, style, attitude and happiness. Most of the senior girls I photograph are full of confidence while the guys tend to show of all their swagger — even the ones you didn’t think had it in them. It is like every 18 year knows exactly how to work it for the camera and they turn into pro models before my eyes.

I love love love shooting seniors. We have a blast and I can get away with acting a little dorky. I love hearing about where these young people are headed and all about their big dreams.

My first senior from the class of 2013 is also my “senior rep”, Nikky. And Nikky is the perfect senior rep. She is absolutely beautiful and flawless (hello Kate Middleton look alike!). She came to the shoot looking her best with lovely hair and make up, a few outfit choices, and she was ready to have some fun.

I was super impressed snd inspired by Nikky (not to mention wanting to find those shoes!). Thank you, Nikky for an awesome shoot and for letting me use your face to show class of 2013-ers what I have to offer :)

Baby girl growing up…

It seems every single day my daughter is growing up way too fast. From her super adorable use of the word delectable (thank you,Fancy Nancy). To her astonishing sense of style and girly ways (sparkle is her favorite color after all). Some days I have to remind myself that she is only four. And then the realization hits me — she is four…already?!?! How did that happen? She was so tiny curled up under my chin like 5 minutes ago. It is like that feeling when you have fallen asleep and have no idea what time it is or how long you’ve been asleep. But thankfully I haven’t been asleep. I have been trying to enjoy every minute of it, but as life goes I can’t hang on to every awesome minute nearly long enough. Mostly because each passing minute with my baby girl in my life is better then the last.

Even as I have been giving my all to help mold, shape and nurture her as she grows, she in turn has been doing it for me. Let’s face it… I am the hsppiest, bravest, strongest, and proudest because of my daughter. She inspires me, challenges me and motivates me. And she has served as my favorite model since birth. I never get sick of taking her picture…although she seems to get sick of me taking her picture (go figure).

She was quite the trooper during our four-year photo shoot. We actually had a crazy “peeing in the woods” incident (no bathroom in site and only 5 minutes into the shoot means squatting by the tree…thank god I had tissues in my bag – ha!). But in the end we got some great photos of my precious (always my baby) girl.

Gina & Julie Are Married – Part 2 | Milwaukee Wedding Photographer

Gina and Julie had a wonderful ceremony full of so much love. The ceremony and reception were both held in the Wild Earth Restaurant at Potowatomi Bingo Casino.  The set up was very intimate with guests literally surrounding the brides in small groups all around the room.  It seemed to me that every person in attendance was in some way an extension of the actual bridal party instead of just witnesses.  I loved the feeling…it was happy and positive and perfect for a wedding!

The ceremony was also special because of the different spiritual traditions and rituals that the couple incorporated.  The night before the ceremony at the rehearsal, there was a Native American Smudging cleansing ritual.  I didn’t know much about this ritual so I looked it up…the ritual cleanses the room and people of all negativity.  See, I wasn’t just imagining that positive energy…  Then during the ceremony, the brides jumped the broom (African American tradition), walked the Hindu 7 steps and broke the glass (Jewish tradition).

Gina was first to walk down the isle, escorted by her proud mother.  Then Julie came down the isle, escorted by her brother to her beloved.

The couple wrote their own vows.  Their personal words were so beautiful.  Gina talked about how her idea of what happily ever after was suppose to look like was wrong and how she found it in Julie.  Julie vowed all the happiness and love to her bride.  It was so sweet!

Here the couple was blessed by another couple close to them.  A red ribbon was tied around their wrists unifying them.  Then everyone was invited up to show their love and congratulations to the couple…but this was not the receiving line. This actually took place in the middle of the ceremony!  I was able to get some very sweet pictures of all the hugging, but then the crowd grew and it was hard to see anyone.  It was a big love-fest!

And here they go, Jumping the Broom!

And… “Mazel tov!”

Amberg Family | Milwaukee Family Photographer

I was so honored to be asked to take this family’s photos before they moved to Chicago.  Like literally they called and scheduled the shoot within days of the moving trucks pulling up.  It was Halloween weekend so it made for a very spirited shoot. What you can’t see if that I had a giant, black, fuzzy spider to keep the kids smiling.  It even got the parents going – ha! Continue reading »

Gina & Julie Are Married – Part 1 | Milwaukee Wedding Photographer

I have been blessed with the opportunity to photograph a very special wedding.  A wedding that I was truly honored to be a part of.  A wedding that celebrated a pure, true and faithful love of two people.  A wedding that brought together two strong families.  A wedding that swelled with humble, sincerity unlike many that I have witnessed.  It was the wedding of Gina and Julie – yes, it was the wedding of two women.  Continue reading »

Geise Family | Milwaukee Family Photography

One of our go-to babysitters, Ashley has one of the most outgoing personalities I have ever encountered.  She is fun and energetic.  A great find to keep up with my 3 year old.  I am always curious about the family of such a wonderful person so I was thrilled to be asked to take the Giese family photos this year.  Talk about fun!  They literally laughed through the entire shoot.  I was introduced to Ashley’s parents and her dad’s name is Charlie…but they called him “chuckles” so I started calling him Chuck thinking he must like to be called Chuck.  Well no, that apparently was a sweet nick name only his daughters can get away with.  He looked at me like I had two heads.  But honestly I l kind of think Chuckles suits him.  You can tell he is a fun loving dad and hubby and his girls are pretty terrific too.  So forever in my heart, Ashley’s dad will be Chuckles (even if I can’t away with saying it out loud – ha!)

It was a beautiful morning filled with tons of laughs and I can’t thank Chuckles and his girls enough for the opportunity to spend some time with them.  The resulting images are priceless! Continue reading »
